This article is inspired by one of our WhiskyAngelz podcast episodes, Outlaws and Angels: The Wild Whisky ‘Rescue’ of the SS Politician. If you’re a fan of whisky, history, and a good laugh, this legendary tale of wartime hijinks, forbidden treasures, and community spirit will leave you raising a dram in admiration.

Whisky Galore the SS Politician: A Legendary Shipwreck

Whisky Galore the SS Politician is a story that has it all: a wartime shipwreck, a remote Scottish island, 22,000 cases of whisky, and £3 million in Jamaican banknotes. It’s a saga of chaos, community, and creativity that has become the stuff of legend, inspiring books, films, and countless dram-filled conversations.

Let’s set sail on this wild tale, starting in February 1941. The SS Politician, a ship with a storied past, was on its final voyage from Liverpool, carrying a mixed cargo that included cotton, sweets, machetes, and, most importantly, whisky. The whisky, destined for America to raise much-needed wartime funds, was stored in Hold Number Five, alongside the fortune in banknotes. But fate had other plans.

The Shipwreck That Sparked a Whisky Frenzy

On the 4th of February, 1941, the SS Politician ran aground off the coast of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides. Bad weather and poor visibility were to blame, and the ship’s hull was breached, flooding the engine room and forcing the crew to abandon ship. Thankfully, all 51 crew members were rescued by local lifeboats and fishermen.

But as the sailors warmed themselves ashore, word of the ship’s cargo began to spread. Whisky was a rare and precious commodity during wartime, heavily rationed and almost impossible to find. The mere mention of 22,000 cases of Scotch whisky was enough to set the islanders’ imaginations alight.

Whisky Galore the SS Politician: The “Rescue” Begins

The next morning, locals began making their way to the wreck of the SS Politician. Whisky Galore the SS Politician had become a rallying cry for the community, and the “rescue” effort was soon in full swing. However, Hold Number Five was flooded with seawater and oil, making it a messy and challenging operation.

Despite the difficulties, the islanders persevered. By night, they worked in teams, hauling crates of whisky from the wreck and hiding them in rabbit holes, peat stacks, under floorboards, and even in the sea. The ingenuity and determination of the locals were nothing short of remarkable.

The Authorities Step In

Of course, this “rescue” didn’t go unnoticed. Customs and Excise officers quickly suspected looting and began patrolling the area. Salvage crews were brought in to recover the cargo, but they largely ignored Hold Number Five, deeming it too difficult to access. This left the whisky ripe for the taking, and the islanders weren’t about to pass up the opportunity.

Whisky Galore the SS Politician became a game of cat and mouse between the authorities and the locals. Customs officers searched crofts and confiscated thousands of items but found little whisky. The islanders were simply too clever, and their community spirit made it nearly impossible for the authorities to gain the upper hand.

The Clash of Cultures

The story of Whisky Galore the SS Politician is as much about the clash between officialdom and local traditions as it is about the whisky itself. Wartime rationing and the scarcity of goods created a perfect storm for this legendary tale. The islanders saw the whisky as a gift from the sea, a treasure to be shared and enjoyed. The authorities, on the other hand, viewed it as stolen property and a loss of government revenue.

This cultural clash came to a head when Customs and Excise officers began seizing boats suspected of being used to access the wreck. For a fishing community, this was devastating. Livelihoods were at stake, and resentment towards the authorities grew.

Explosives and Dynamite Whisky

Perhaps the most controversial moment in the story of Whisky Galore the SS Politician came when the authorities decided to destroy the remaining whisky in Hold Number Five. Using 16 sticks of gelignite, they blew up the hold, sending perfectly good whisky to a watery grave. As one local famously said, “Dynamite whisky! You wouldn’t think there’d be men in the world so daft as that.”

The explosion marked the end of the whisky “rescue,” but the legend of the SS Politician was just beginning.

The Legacy of Whisky Galore the SS Politician

The story of the SS Politician has left an indelible mark on Scottish culture. It inspired Compton Mackenzie’s novel Whisky Galore, which was later adapted into two films. The pub on Eriskay is still called The Politician, and bottles of whisky salvaged from the wreck occasionally turn up at auctions, fetching thousands of pounds.

Even today, the tale of Whisky Galore the SS Politician continues to capture the imagination. It’s a story of community, resilience, and the enduring allure of whisky. Who knows what other treasures might still be hidden beneath the waves?
